About this tool
What the Scholarship Search ROI Calculator does
Scholarship applications take time, and most are not won. Multiplying the number of applications by a realistic success rate and average award gives expected winnings; dividing by hours spent shows the effective hourly value of the search.
Formula
- Expected awards = applications × success rate
- Expected money = awards × average award × years renewed
- Value per hour = expected money ÷ hours
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Applications submitted | 15 |
| Hours per application | 3 |
| Hours spent searching | 10 |
| Success rate | 12% |
| Average award | $2,500 |
| Average years an award renews | 1.5 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Expected scholarship money | $6,750 |
| Expected value per hour | $122.73 |
| Expected awards | 1.8 |
| Total hours | 55.0 |
How to read the result
Local and niche scholarships have fewer applicants and higher success rates than national ones.
Reusing and tailoring a strong core essay cuts the hours per application.
