About this tool

What the Asphalt Paving Calculator does

Asphalt is ordered by weight. Multiply the area by the compacted thickness to get volume, then by the density of the mix, about 145 lb per cubic foot for typical hot mix. That works out at roughly 110 to 115 lb per square yard per inch of thickness.

Formula

  • Volume = length × width × thickness ÷ 12
  • Tons = volume × density ÷ 2,000 × (1 + waste)
  • Cost = tons × price per ton

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Length 60 ft
Width 20 ft
Compacted thickness 3 in
Density 145 lb per cu ft
Waste allowance 5%
Price per ton $120
Result Value
Asphalt needed 22.8
Material cost $2,741
Area 1,200
Area 133.3

How to read the result

Residential driveways are often 2 to 3 inches of asphalt over a compacted gravel base; heavier traffic needs more.

Base preparation and drainage determine how long the surface lasts as much as the asphalt does.

Quantities are estimates. Check product data sheets and local codes, and confirm with your supplier before ordering.
