About this tool
What it counts
Words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and an estimated reading time at around two hundred words a minute. The character counts are the ones worth watching if you are writing a meta description, a social post or anything else with a hard limit.
Reading time is an estimate rather than a measurement. People read at very different speeds, and dense technical prose takes longer than the same word count of plain narrative.
Why it runs in your browser
Most online word counters send whatever you paste to a server. For a shopping list that hardly matters. For an unpublished article, a client proposal or anything covered by a confidentiality agreement, it very much does.
This one does the counting locally. There is no request to send your text anywhere, which you can confirm in your browser network tab.
Characters with and without spaces
We show both figures because different systems count differently. Social platforms generally include spaces in their limits, while some legacy content systems exclude them. If you are writing to a limit someone else set, check which one they mean before trusting the number.
The sentence count uses terminal punctuation, so text without full stops reports as a single sentence. That is usually a signal worth acting on in itself.
