Security and Utility Tools
SHA Hash Generator
Uses the browser built-in cryptography, so the input never leaves your machine.
- Runs in your browser
- Nothing uploaded
The tool
Paste your input and choose an algorithm.
Everything you enter stays on your own machine. Nothing is sent to us or to anyone else, which you can confirm in your browser network tab.
What people use it for
- Verifying a downloaded file matches its published checksum
- Comparing two pieces of text for an exact match
- Generating a content fingerprint for caching
- Checking a hash produced by another system
- Understanding how a small change alters a digest completely
About this tool
What a hash is
A hash turns any input into a fixed-length fingerprint. The same input always produces the same digest, and changing anything at all produces a completely different one. It runs one way only: you cannot recover the input from the digest.
Which algorithm
SHA-256 is the sensible default. SHA-384 and SHA-512 produce longer digests. SHA-1 is included because you will still encounter it in older systems, but it is broken for security purposes and should not be chosen for anything new.
Hashing is not password storage
A plain hash suits password storage badly, because it runs fast, and fast is exactly what an attacker wants. Password storage needs a deliberately slow algorithm with a salt, such as bcrypt or Argon2.
Verifying a download
The common use is checking a downloaded file against a published checksum. The digests must match exactly, character for character, every time. A single differing character means the file is not the one that was published, which may mean corruption in transit or something worse.

Questions
Questions about this tool
The things clients actually want to know — costs, timelines, ownership and what happens after launch.
No. Hashing is one-way. Brute force still finds short common inputs, which is why passwords need salting and a slow algorithm.
Not for anything new. It fails for security purposes. It exists only for checking against older systems.
No. It calls the browser built-in Web Crypto API and makes no request.
Not here. This handles text. A command line tool suits checksumming a file better.
That is the point. A hash is deterministic, which is what makes it useful for verification.
