About this tool
Why one file is not enough
A browser tab wants 32 pixels. An Android home screen wants 192 and 512. iOS wants a 180 pixel apple-touch-icon, and it will not use a transparent background, it will composite your icon onto black. Shipping a single favicon.ico and hoping is how sites end up with a blurry smudge on a phone home screen.
Design for 16 pixels first
At tab size you have roughly the detail budget of a single letter. A full wordmark is unreadable there. Use the initials option, or a symbol with one clear silhouette, and check it by squinting at the preview from an arm away. If you cannot tell what it is, neither can anyone else.
Where the files go
Put them in your site root and paste the link tags into the head of every page. On WordPress, Appearance then Customise then Site Identity will handle the basic icon, but the explicit tags give you control over the Android and iOS sizes that the customiser does not set.
About .ico files
Modern browsers read PNG favicons perfectly well, which is why this exports PNG. A .ico file is only needed for very old versions of Internet Explorer, and if those are in your audience you have larger compatibility questions than this tool can answer.
