About this tool

What the Break-even Calculator does

The break-even point is where revenue exactly covers fixed and variable costs. Each unit sold contributes its price minus its variable cost towards fixed costs; dividing fixed costs by that contribution gives the units you must sell before making any profit.

It also works as a break-even units calculator or a break-even point calculator.

Formula

  • Contribution per unit = price − variable cost per unit
  • Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ contribution per unit
  • Units for a profit target = (fixed costs + target profit) ÷ contribution per unit
  • Margin of safety = (expected sales − break-even) ÷ expected sales

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Fixed costs for the period $12,000
Selling price per unit $50.00
Variable cost per unit $30.00
Target profit (optional) $6,000
Expected sales in units (optional) 900
Result Value
Break-even units 600
Break-even revenue $30,000
Contribution per unit $20.00
Contribution margin ratio 40.0%
Units for target profit 900
Margin of safety 33.3%

How to read the result

The margin of safety tells you how far sales can fall before you make a loss. A negative figure means your expected sales are below break-even.

Raising price usually moves break-even more than cutting costs, because every extra unit of price goes straight to contribution.

Questions

Questions about this tool

The things clients actually want to know — costs, timelines, ownership and what happens after launch.

Divide fixed costs by the contribution per unit, which is the selling price minus the variable cost per unit.

Fixed costs, such as rent and salaries, stay the same as sales change. Variable costs, such as materials, rise with each unit sold.

How much expected sales exceed break-even sales, as a percentage of expected sales.
