About this tool
What the Franchise ROI Calculator does
A franchise’s return depends on the total upfront investment and on how much revenue survives royalties, the marketing fund and operating costs. This calculator works out annual owner profit, the return on the money invested and how many years it takes to recover it.
Formula
- Total investment = franchise fee + build-out + working capital
- Owner profit = revenue × (1 − royalty − marketing fund − operating costs)
- ROI = owner profit ÷ investment
- Payback = investment ÷ owner profit
Worked example

How to read the result
If you plan to work in the business, deduct a fair salary for yourself before judging the return; otherwise you are counting your wages as investment profit.
Ask existing franchisees for their real revenue and cost ratios; the franchise disclosure documents may also include financial performance information.
