About this tool
What the Teacher Salary to Hourly Calculator does
Teachers are paid for a set number of contract days, but much work, such as grading, planning and communicating with families, happens outside contract hours. Comparing the hourly rate on contract time with the rate on actual time shows what the salary really pays per hour.
It also works as a teaching salary to hourly calculator.
Formula
- Contract hours = contract days × hours per day
- Real hours = contract hours + extra weekly hours × weeks + summer preparation
- Hourly = salary ÷ hours
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |

| Annual salary | $58,000 |
| Contract days | 185 |
| Contract hours per day | 7.5 |
| Extra unpaid hours per week | 8 |
| Teaching weeks | 37 |
| Unpaid summer preparation hours | 30 |
| Result | Value |

| Hourly rate on real hours | $33.85 |
| Hourly rate on contract hours | $41.80 |
| Real hours per year | 1,714 |
| Contract hours per year | 1,388 |
| Daily rate | $314 |
How to read the result
Use the daily rate when comparing with substitute or summer school pay.
Track real hours for a few weeks; most teachers underestimate time spent outside contract hours.
