About this tool

What the Newsletter Monetization Calculator does

Newsletters earn mainly from sponsors, who usually pay a CPM on opens, and from readers who pay for a premium tier. This calculator combines both so you can see which model matters more for your audience and what each subscriber is worth.

Formula

  • Sponsorship = subscribers × open rate × issues ÷ 1,000 × CPM × slots sold
  • Paid income = subscribers × paid conversion × price × (1 − fees)
  • Income per subscriber = annual income ÷ subscribers

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Subscribers 20,000
Open rate 45%
Issues per month 4
Sponsor CPM (per 1,000 opens) $30.00
Sponsor slots sold 70%
Paid subscriber conversion 2%
Paid price per month $8.00
Platform and payment fees 13%
Result Value
Monthly newsletter income $3,540
Annual income $42,480
Sponsorship per month $756
Paid subscriptions per month $2,784
Paying subscribers 400
Annual income per subscriber $2.12

How to read the result

Sponsors care about engaged readers, so a smaller list with a high open rate and clear audience profile often commands a higher CPM than a large general list.

Paid conversion rates of a few percent are common for free-to-paid newsletters. Content that is genuinely exclusive converts better than early access alone.

Questions about this tool

The things clients actually want to know — costs, timelines, ownership and what happens after launch.

Sponsors commonly pay a CPM based on opens, typically higher for niche professional audiences than for broad consumer lists.

Sponsors often start paying attention at a few thousand engaged subscribers in a clear niche. Paid tiers can work at any size if the content is valuable.

Most sponsors price on opens or clicks, because those reflect people who actually saw the message.
