About this tool

What the Machine Utilisation Calculator does

Machine utilisation is the share of available time a machine actually runs. Breaking non-running time into setup, breakdowns, waiting for material and no orders shows where capacity is lost, and an hourly machine cost converts idle time into money.

It also works as a machine utilization rate calculator.

Formula

  • Run time = available − setup − breakdowns − waiting − no orders
  • Utilisation = run time ÷ available time
  • Idle cost = non-running hours × machine cost per hour

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Available hours in the period 160
Setup and changeover hours 14
Breakdown hours 9
Waiting for material or operator 12
No orders scheduled 20
Machine cost per hour $85.00
Result Value
Utilisation 65.6%
Largest loss No orders
Run hours 105.0
Non-running hours 55.0
Cost of non-running time $4,675

How to read the result

Separate losses you control (setup, breakdowns, waiting) from lack of demand; the fixes are very different.

Short setups through SMED techniques often recover the most capacity with little investment.

Run time divided by available time.

It depends on the machine's role; bottleneck machines should be kept highly utilised.

No. OEE also accounts for speed and quality losses while running.
