About this tool

What the Scrap Rate Calculator does

Scrap rate is the share of production that cannot be used or sold. First-pass yield is the share made right first time without rework. Multiplying scrapped units by their material and labour cost shows what quality problems cost.

Formula

  • Scrap rate = scrapped ÷ produced
  • First-pass yield = (produced − scrapped − reworked) ÷ produced
  • Scrap cost = scrapped × (material + labour)

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Units produced 25,000
Units scrapped 600
Units reworked 900
Material cost per unit $6.50
Labour and overhead per unit $3.20
Rework cost per unit $2.10
Result Value
Scrap rate 2.40%
First-pass yield 94.0%
Cost of scrap and rework $7,710
Scrap cost $5,820
Rework cost $1,890

How to read the result

Track scrap by cause and machine, then attack the biggest causes first; Pareto charts make this quick.

Scrap found late in the process costs more because more labour has been added.
