About this tool
What the SMED Changeover Calculator does
Single-Minute Exchange of Die (SMED) reduces changeover time by moving setup work outside machine stoppage and streamlining what remains. Shorter changeovers free production hours, or allow more frequent changeovers and smaller batches at the same capacity.
It also works as a smed changeover calculator or a changeover time calculator.
Formula
- Hours freed per week = changeovers × (current − target) ÷ 60
- Extra units = hours freed × output per hour × weeks
- Value = extra units × contribution per unit
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Changeovers per week | 15 |
| Current changeover time | 75 minutes |
| Target changeover time | 20 minutes |
| Output per production hour | 300 units |
| Contribution per unit | $1.80 |
| Operating weeks per year | 48 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Production hours freed per week | 13.8 |
| Annual value of extra output | $356,400 |
| Hours freed per year | 660 |
| Extra units per year | 198,000 |
| Or extra changeovers per week in the same time | 41 |
How to read the result
Start by video-recording a changeover and separating internal tasks (machine stopped) from external tasks (can be done while running).
Freed time is only valuable if you can sell the extra output or use it to cut batch sizes and inventory.
