About this tool

What the Labour Efficiency Calculator does

Labour efficiency compares the standard hours allowed for the output produced with the hours actually worked. Above 100% means work was done faster than standard. The labour efficiency variance puts the difference in money at the standard wage rate.

It also works as a labor efficiency calculator.

Formula

  • Standard hours earned = units × standard hours per unit
  • Efficiency = standard hours ÷ actual hours
  • Variance = (standard hours − actual hours) × standard rate

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Units produced 4,200
Standard hours per unit 0.25
Actual hours worked 1,150
Standard wage rate $24.00
Result Value
Labour efficiency 91.3%
Efficiency variance (+ favourable) -$2,400
Standard hours earned 1,050.0
Units per labour hour 3.65

How to read the result

Outdated standards make efficiency figures meaningless; review standards when processes change.

Look at efficiency by cell or product, not just plant-wide averages.
