About this tool
What the Haul Truck Resistance Calculator does
Mining and earthmoving trucks must overcome rolling resistance from the road surface and grade resistance on slopes. Expressing both as percentages gives the total effective grade, which equipment rimpull and retarder charts use to find speed. Each 1% of grade equals about 10 kg of force per tonne.
Formula
- Total effective grade = rolling resistance % + grade %
- Resistance ≈ 10 kgf per tonne for each 1%
- Force (kN) = GVW (t) × 9.81 × effective grade
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Gross vehicle weight | 380 tonnes |
| Rolling resistance | 3% |
| Road grade (uphill +, downhill −) | 8% |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Total effective grade | 11.0% |
| Force required | 410 |
| Operating mode | Propel uphill (rimpull) |
| Rolling resistance | 11,400 |
| Grade resistance | 30,400 |
How to read the result
Every 1% of rolling resistance acts like 1% more grade; road maintenance directly improves cycle times and fuel use.
Negative effective grade means the truck must retard; check retarder charts for safe descent speeds.
