About this tool
What the Gym Break-even Calculator does
A gym’s costs are mostly fixed: rent, staff, equipment finance and utilities. Each member contributes their monthly fee minus variable costs such as payment fees and consumables. Dividing fixed costs by contribution per member gives the break-even membership, and churn shows how many new members are needed each month just to stand still.
It also works as a gym membership break-even calculator.
Formula
- Contribution = fee − variable cost
- Break-even members = fixed costs ÷ contribution
- New members to offset churn = target members × churn rate
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Monthly fixed costs | $28,000 |
| Average monthly membership fee | $45.00 |
| Variable cost per member per month | $4.00 |
| Target monthly profit | $6,000 |
| Monthly churn | 4% |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Break-even members | 683 |
| Members for target profit | 830 |
| New members needed each month to offset churn | 34 |
| Contribution per member | $41.00 |
How to read the result
Retention is cheaper than acquisition: every point of churn removed reduces the new members you must sell each month.
Personal training, classes and retail add revenue per member without extra fixed cost.
