About this tool

What the Dental Insurance Write-off Calculator does

In-network practices bill their usual fee but accept the plan’s contracted fee, writing off the difference. Comparing usual, customary and reasonable (UCR) fees with PPO fees across common procedures shows how much production a plan really pays, which informs decisions about staying in network.

Formula

  • Gross = Σ count × your fee
  • Net = Σ count × contracted fee
  • Write-off % = (gross − net) ÷ gross

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Procedures per month 5 entries
Result Value
Monthly write-off $32,400
Write-off percentage 35.9%
Gross production at your fees $90,200
Net production at PPO fees $57,800
Annual write-off $388,800

How to read the result

Renegotiate PPO fees periodically, especially for high-volume procedures; small increases on exams and cleanings add up.

Model what would happen if some patients left after dropping a plan before deciding to go out of network.
