About this tool
What the Alimony Calculator does
There is no single national alimony formula; states and courts use their own rules. One widely cited reference is the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML) guideline: 30% of the payer’s gross income minus 20% of the recipient’s, limited so the recipient’s total does not exceed 40% of combined income, with duration based on marriage length.
It also works as a alimony spousal support calculator or a spousal support calculator.
Formula
- Support = 30% of payer income − 20% of recipient income
- Cap: recipient income + support ≤ 40% of combined income
- Duration = marriage years × 0.3 (0–3 yrs), 0.5 (3–10), 0.75 (10–20), indefinite for 20+
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Higher earner’s gross annual income | $150,000 |
| Lower earner’s gross annual income | $40,000 |
| Length of marriage | 12 years |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Estimated monthly support | $3,000 |
| Suggested duration | 9 years |
| Annual support | $36,000 |
| Reduced by the cap | Yes, limited by the 40% cap |
How to read the result
Many states use their own statutory formulas or wide judicial discretion; actual awards can differ greatly from this guideline.
Tax treatment changed in the US for divorces after 2018: alimony is no longer deductible by the payer or taxable to the recipient under federal law.
General information only, not legal advice. Laws and court practice vary by jurisdiction; consult a qualified lawyer.

The things clients actually want to know — costs, timelines, ownership and what happens after launch.
It depends on the state. Some use formulas; others weigh factors such as income, needs, marriage length and contributions.
A recommended guideline: 30% of payer income minus 20% of recipient income, capped at 40% of combined income for the recipient.
Often related to marriage length; long marriages may lead to indefinite support in some states.
