About this tool
What the Parenting Time Calculator does
Many child support guidelines and custody discussions use the number of overnights each parent has in a year. Common schedules have known overnight counts: alternating weekends gives the other parent about 52 to 104 overnights, while 2-2-3 or week-on/week-off schedules split time evenly. Holidays and summer often shift the balance.
It also works as a child custody parenting time calculator or a custody percentage calculator.
Formula
- Parent B overnights = regular schedule + summer + holidays
- Parent A overnights = 365 − parent B
- Percentage = overnights ÷ 365
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Regular schedule for parent B | Alternate weekends, one night (52) |
| Extra summer overnights for parent B | 14 |
| Net holiday overnights for parent B | 6 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Parent B parenting time | 19.7% |
| Parent A parenting time | 80.3% |
| Parent B overnights | 72 |
| Parent A overnights | 293 |
How to read the result
Some state child support guidelines adjust support once a parent passes a threshold of overnights, so small schedule changes can matter financially.
Courts focus on the child’s best interests; overnight counts are one input, not the decision itself.
General information only, not legal advice. Laws and court practice vary by jurisdiction; consult a qualified lawyer.
