About this tool
What the Accounts Payable Days Calculator does
Accounts payable days, or days payables outstanding (DPO), measures how long a business takes to pay its suppliers. Paying later keeps cash in the business for longer, but paying beyond agreed terms damages supplier relationships and can cost early-payment discounts.
It also works as a DPO calculator or a days payables outstanding calculator.
Formula
- DPO = accounts payable ÷ cost of goods sold × days
- Payables turnover = cost of goods sold ÷ payables
- Cash effect = (target DPO − current DPO) × daily purchases
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Accounts payable | $180,000 |
| Cost of goods sold or purchases | $1,500,000 |
| Days in period | 365 |
| Target DPO | 45 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Days payables outstanding | 43.8 days |
| Cash effect of moving to target DPO | $4,932 |
| Payables turnover | 8.33x |
How to read the result
A positive cash effect means moving to the target keeps more cash in the business; a negative one means paying faster uses cash.
Before extending payment times, check whether suppliers offer early-payment discounts. A 2% discount for paying 20 days early is worth more than most short-term borrowing costs.

Divide accounts payable by cost of goods sold (or purchases) and multiply by the days in the period.
It helps cash flow, but paying later than agreed can harm supplier relationships and credit terms.
Purchases on credit is more precise; COGS is commonly used because it is easier to obtain.
