About this tool
What the Cash Flow to Debt Ratio Calculator does
The cash flow to debt ratio divides operating cash flow by total debt. It shows how much of the debt one year of operations could repay, and its inverse gives the number of years it would take to clear the debt if all operating cash went to repayment.
Formula
- Cash flow to debt = operating cash flow ÷ total debt
- Years to repay = total debt ÷ operating cash flow
- Free cash flow = operating cash flow − capital expenditure
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Annual operating cash flow | $400,000 |
| Total debt | $1,600,000 |
| Annual capital expenditure (optional) | $100,000 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Cash flow to debt ratio | 0.25 |
| Years to repay from operating cash flow | 4 years |
| Free cash flow to debt | 0.19 |
| Years to repay from free cash flow | 5.3 years |
How to read the result
Free cash flow gives a stricter test, because a business must keep investing in equipment and systems before repaying debt.
Lenders often prefer debt that could be repaid within a few years of cash flow; long repayment horizons signal high leverage.
