About this tool

What the Takt Time Calculator does

Takt time is the pace at which a product must be completed to meet customer demand: available production time divided by units demanded. If your process cycle time is longer than takt, you cannot keep up without overtime, more capacity or improvement.

Formula

  • Available time = (shift minutes − breaks) × shifts
  • Takt time = available time ÷ customer demand
  • Capacity = available time ÷ cycle time

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Shift length 8 hours
Shifts per day 2
Planned breaks per shift 50 minutes
Customer demand per day 760 units
Current cycle time 68 seconds
Result Value
Takt time 67.9
Line status Cycle time is slower than takt
Units possible at current cycle time 758
Available production time 14.3

How to read the result

Balance work across stations so each one’s cycle time sits just under takt; the slowest station sets the line’s pace.

Takt changes when demand changes; revisit it with each demand forecast.

Questions about this tool

The things clients actually want to know — costs, timelines, ownership and what happens after launch.

The rate at which products must be completed to meet customer demand.

Takt is the required pace; cycle time is how long the process actually takes per unit.

Yes. Use only the time the line can actually run.
