About this tool
What the Social Security Benefits Estimator does
Social Security retirement benefits start from the primary insurance amount (PIA): 90% of average indexed monthly earnings (AIME) up to the first bend point, 32% up to the second and 15% above. Claiming before full retirement age reduces the benefit; delaying up to age 70 increases it by 8% a year.
Formula
- AIME = average indexed annual earnings ÷ 12
- PIA = 90% × AIME to bend 1 + 32% between bends + 15% above bend 2
- Early: −5/9 of 1% per month for 36 months, −5/12 of 1% per month beyond
- Delayed: +2/3 of 1% per month up to age 70

How to read the result
Your actual record is at ssa.gov; this estimate is only as good as the average earnings you enter.
Delaying increases your benefit and any survivor benefit for a spouse, which often matters for the higher earner in a couple.
