About this tool

What the GS Pay Calculator does

Federal General Schedule pay is the base rate for your grade and step plus a locality percentage for your area. Within a grade, step increases come after waiting periods: 52 weeks for steps 2 to 4, 104 weeks for steps 5 to 7 and 156 weeks for steps 8 to 10.

It also works as a GS pay scale calculator or a General Schedule pay calculator.

Formula

  • Salary = base pay × (1 + locality %)
  • Hourly = salary ÷ 2,087
  • Waiting periods: 52 weeks (steps 2–4), 104 weeks (5–7), 156 weeks (8–10)

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Base pay for your grade and step $82,764
Locality pay percentage 33.94%
Current step Step 3
Result Value
Annual salary with locality $110,854
Hourly rate (2,087 hours) $53.12
Biweekly gross $4,264
Years to reach step 10 16 years

How to read the result

Within-grade increases require acceptable performance; quality step increases can add a step early.

Locality pay is capped by the executive pay limit for some higher grades and steps.

Estimates only. Official rates and rules change; confirm figures with the relevant agency before relying on them.
