About this tool
What the VA Disability Rating Calculator does
The VA does not add disability ratings. It applies each rating to the remaining “whole person”: a 50% rating leaves 50% efficiency, and a further 30% applies to that 50%, giving 65%. Ratings for paired limbs on both sides add a 10% bilateral factor. The combined value is then rounded to the nearest 10%.
Formula
- Sort ratings from highest; each rating applies to remaining efficiency
- Bilateral ratings are combined first and increased by 10% of their value
- Round the combined value to the nearest 10 (5 rounds up)
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Ratings | 4 entries |
| Monthly compensation for the combined rating (optional) | $0.00 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Combined VA rating | 70 |
| Combined value before rounding | 72.3 |
| Annual compensation | $0.00 |
How to read the result
Additional compensation for dependants and special monthly compensation are paid on top of the basic rate.
The VA’s own decision letter is authoritative; use this to understand how ratings combine.
Estimates only. Official rates and rules change; confirm figures with the relevant agency before relying on them.
