About this tool
What the Military Pay Calculator does
Military compensation combines taxable basic pay (set by rank and years of service) with largely tax-free allowances such as Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) and Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS). Regular military compensation (RMC) adds the tax advantage of allowances to compare with civilian salaries.
It also works as a military basic pay calculator.
Formula
- Monthly total = basic pay + special pays + BAH + BAS
- Tax advantage ≈ allowances × tax rate ÷ (1 − tax rate)
- RMC = annual total + tax advantage
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Monthly basic pay | $3,800 |
| Monthly BAH | $2,100 |
| Monthly BAS | $476 |
| Monthly special and incentive pays (taxable) | $0.00 |
| Your marginal tax rate | 12% |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Annual pay and allowances | $76,512 |
| Regular military compensation (with tax advantage) | $80,727 |
| Monthly total | $6,376 |
| Tax-free allowances per year | $30,912 |
