About this tool
What the Scope Creep Cost Calculator does
Scope creep is work added to a project without a matching change to price or timeline. Each small request seems harmless, but together they erode margin. This calculator shows the effective hourly rate after unbilled extras and what they would cost if billed properly.
Formula
- Planned rate = price ÷ planned hours
- Actual rate = price ÷ (planned + extra hours)
- Unbilled value = extra hours × standard rate
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Project price | $12,000 |
| Planned hours | 120 |
| Extra unbilled hours | 35 |
| Your standard rate | $100 |
| Your cost per hour | $45.00 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Effective rate with scope creep | $77.42 |
| Value of unbilled extra work | $3,500 |
| Planned effective rate | $100.00 |
| Profit lost | $1,575 |
| Actual profit margin | 41.9% |
