About this tool
What the Day Rate to Annual Income Calculator does
A day rate can look high next to a salary, but contractors are paid only for days worked and must cover their own costs and benefits. This calculator turns a day rate into annual revenue for realistic working days, then into an approximate salary equivalent.
Formula
- Revenue = day rate × billed days
- Profit = revenue − business costs
- Salary equivalent ≈ profit ÷ (1 + benefits share)
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Day rate | $550 |
| Days billed per year | 200 |
| Business costs per year | $6,000 |
| Benefits an employer would provide | 20% |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Annual revenue | $110,000 |
| Approximate salary equivalent | $86,667 |
| Profit before tax | $104,000 |
| Average monthly revenue | $9,167 |
| Hourly equivalent (8-hour day) | $68.75 |
How to read the result
Gaps between contracts are the biggest risk; budget for fewer billed days than a full year, especially early on.
Tax treatment of contractor income differs by country and structure, so compare after-tax figures before deciding.
