About this tool
What the Production Capacity Calculator does
Design capacity is what equipment could produce running flat out; effective capacity allows for efficiency losses such as changeovers, breakdowns and slower running. Comparing demand with effective capacity shows utilisation and whether extra shifts or equipment are needed.
Formula
- Design capacity = machines × rate × hours × days
- Effective capacity = design × efficiency
- Utilisation = demand ÷ effective capacity
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Machines | 4 |
| Rated output per machine per hour | 120 units |
| Operating hours per day | 16 |
| Operating days per month | 22 |
| Overall efficiency | 75% |
| Monthly demand | 120,000 units |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Effective monthly capacity | 126,720 |
| Capacity utilisation at this demand | 94.7% |
| Design capacity | 168,960 |
| Demand above (+) or below (−) capacity | -6,720 |
How to read the result
Running consistently above about 85% utilisation leaves little room for maintenance and demand spikes, and lead times grow.
Overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) data gives a more accurate efficiency figure than a guess.
