About this tool
What the Overtime Pay Calculator does
Overtime is paid at a premium on hours beyond a threshold, most commonly 40 hours a week at 1.5 times the regular rate in the US. Some states and contracts also require double time. This calculator splits the week into regular, overtime and double-time hours and totals the pay.
Formula
- Regular hours = the lesser of hours worked and the threshold
- Overtime pay = overtime hours × rate × multiplier
- Double time = double-time hours × rate × 2
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Regular hourly rate | $22.00 |
| Hours worked this week | 48 |
| Overtime starts after | 40 hours |
| Overtime multiplier | 1.5 |
| Double-time hours (within the total) | 0 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Total pay for the week | $1,144.00 |
| Overtime pay | $264.00 |
| Regular pay | $880.00 |
| Double-time pay | $0.00 |
| Overtime hours | 8.0 |
| Average hourly earnings | $23.83 |
How to read the result
Under US federal law, non-exempt employees earn overtime after 40 hours in a workweek; some states, such as California, also have daily overtime rules.
The regular rate for overtime can include non-discretionary bonuses and shift differentials, which raises the overtime rate.
