About this tool

What the NPS Calculator does

Net Promoter Score is the percentage of promoters (scores of 9 or 10) minus the percentage of detractors (0 to 6), giving a figure between −100 and +100. This calculator also shows how much the score would move if some detractors became promoters.

It also works as a NPS impact calculator or a net promoter score calculator.

Formula

  • NPS = % promoters − % detractors
  • Promoters score 9–10, passives 7–8, detractors 0–6
  • Each detractor turned promoter adds 2 ÷ responses × 100 points

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Promoters (9–10) 420
Passives (7–8) 330
Detractors (0–6) 250
Detractors won over to promoters 50
Result Value
Net Promoter Score 17.0
NPS after winning detractors over 27.0
Promoters 42.0%
Detractors 25.0%
Responses 1,000

How to read the result

Passives do not change the score directly, but they dilute both percentages. Turning a detractor into a promoter moves NPS twice as far as either change on its own.

NPS is most useful as a trend with follow-up questions. The reasons detractors give are usually worth more than the score itself.

Questions

Questions about this tool

The things clients actually want to know — costs, timelines, ownership and what happens after launch.

Subtract the percentage of detractors (scores 0 to 6) from the percentage of promoters (scores 9 and 10). Passives count only in the total.

Any score above zero means more promoters than detractors. Scores vary widely by industry, so compare with your own history and close competitors.

More is better. With fewer than about 100 responses, the score can move several points from chance alone.
