About this tool
What the Freight Profit Margin Calculator does
A freight broker’s gross margin is the difference between what the shipper pays and what the carrier is paid, after any other load costs such as quick-pay fees or accessorials that cannot be passed on. Carriers do the same calculation against their operating cost per mile.
Formula
- Margin = shipper rate − carrier cost − other costs
- Margin % = margin ÷ shipper rate
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Shipper rate | $2,600 |
| Carrier cost | $2,150 |
| Other load costs | $45.00 |
| Loaded miles | 850 |
| Loads per month | 120 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Gross margin per load | $405 |
| Gross margin | 15.6% |
| Margin per mile | $0.48 |
| Monthly gross margin | $48,600 |
How to read the result
Brokerage margins commonly sit in the low to mid teens as a percentage; very thin margins leave no room for claims or late payments.
Track margin per load by lane and customer; averages hide unprofitable freight.
