About this tool
What the Warehouse Storage Calculator does
Warehouse capacity is measured in pallet positions. Inventory units divided by units per pallet gives pallets; racking levels and aisle space convert pallet positions into floor area. Third-party warehouses usually charge per pallet per month plus handling in and out.
Formula
- Pallets = units ÷ units per pallet (rounded up)
- Floor area = pallets ÷ racking levels × space per position
- Monthly cost = pallets × storage rate + pallets moved × handling
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Units in stock | 24,000 |
| Units per pallet | 80 |
| Racking levels | 4 |
| Floor space per pallet position incl. aisles | 18 sq ft |
| Storage rate per pallet per month | $18.00 |
| Handling in and out per pallet | $12.00 |
| Pallets moved per month | 150 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Pallet positions | 300 |
| Monthly 3PL cost | $7,200 |
| Floor area needed | 1,350 |
| Storage charges | $5,400 |
| Handling charges | $1,800 |
How to read the result
Plan for peak inventory, not average; seasonal stock builds can double pallet needs.
Slow-moving stock costs storage every month; reviewing it regularly frees space and cash.
