About this tool
What the Electricity Cost Calculator does
An appliance’s running cost is its power in kilowatts multiplied by the hours it runs and your price per kilowatt-hour. List the appliances you want to check to see which ones dominate the bill and what reducing their use would save.
Formula
- kWh per day = watts × hours × quantity ÷ 1,000
- Cost = kWh × price per kWh
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Appliances | 5 entries |
| Price per kWh | $0.16 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Cost per month | $67.56 |
| Cost per year | $811 |
| Energy per month | 422 |
| Energy per day | 13.89 |
How to read the result
Appliances that cycle, such as fridges, rarely draw their full rated watts all day; a plug-in energy monitor gives a real figure.
Time-of-use tariffs make when you run appliances matter as much as how long.
