About this tool
What the Driver Overtime Calculator does
Drivers paid hourly earn overtime above a weekly threshold where overtime rules apply. Some drivers in interstate commerce are exempt from US federal overtime, so check which rules cover your drivers. This calculator works out weekly pay and the overtime premium across the fleet.
Formula
- Overtime hours = hours − threshold
- Pay = regular hours × rate + overtime hours × rate × multiplier
- Premium = overtime hours × rate × (multiplier − 1)
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Hourly rate | $24.00 |
| Hours per week | 52 |
| Overtime after | 40 hours |
| Overtime multiplier | 1.5 |
| Drivers | 12 |
| Overtime rules apply to these drivers | Yes |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Weekly pay per driver | $1,392.00 |
| Annual overtime premium across the fleet | $89,856 |
| Overtime hours per week | 12.0 |
| Overtime premium per driver per week | $144.00 |
| Annual driver payroll | $868,608 |
How to read the result
Hiring another driver can cost less than sustained overtime once the premium across the fleet is counted.
In the US, the Motor Carrier Act exemption removes federal overtime for many interstate drivers, but state law may still require it.

It depends. Many interstate drivers are exempt from US federal overtime; local and intrastate drivers may be covered.
Hours above the threshold are paid at the regular rate times the multiplier, usually 1.5.
