About this tool
What the Depreciation Calculator does
Depreciation spreads the cost of an asset over its useful life. Straight-line charges the same amount each year; double declining balance front-loads the expense; sum-of-the-years’-digits sits in between. This calculator builds the full schedule for the method you choose.
It also works as a equipment depreciation calculator or a asset depreciation calculator.
Formula
- Straight-line = (cost − salvage) ÷ life
- Double declining = book value × 2 ÷ life (never below salvage)
- SYD = (cost − salvage) × remaining life ÷ sum of years’ digits
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Asset cost | $50,000 |
| Salvage value | $5,000 |
| Useful life | 5 years |
| Method | Double declining balance |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Year 1 depreciation | $20,000 |
| Total depreciation | $45,000 |
How to read the result
Accelerated methods match expense to assets that lose value quickly, such as computers and vehicles.
Tax depreciation rules (such as MACRS in the US or capital allowances in the UK) differ from accounting methods; use the rules your tax authority sets for returns.
