About this tool
What the Accrued Expenses Calculator does
Accrual accounting records expenses in the period they are incurred, even if the bill arrives later. For costs that build up evenly, such as wages, utilities or interest, the accrual is the full-period amount multiplied by the share of the period already incurred.
Formula
- Accrual = full-period amount × days incurred ÷ days in period
- Journal: debit the expense, credit accrued liabilities; reverse next period
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Expenses to accrue | 3 entries |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Total accrual | $10,225.00 |
| Accrual lines | 3 |
How to read the result
Use working days for wages when staff are paid for working days only; use calendar days for utilities and interest.
Reversing accruals at the start of the next period stops the expense being counted twice when the invoice arrives.
