About this tool
What the Dental Hygiene Production Calculator does
A healthy hygiene department commonly produces about three times the hygienist’s compensation, and contributes a large share of practice production. This calculator measures daily production, the production-to-wage ratio and how much comes from periodontal therapy rather than routine prophylaxis.
Formula
- Production = routine visits × fee + periodontal procedures × fee
- Ratio = daily production ÷ daily hygienist pay
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Patients per day | 9 |
| Average fee per prophylaxis visit (incl. exam, x-rays) | $210 |
| Periodontal procedures per day | 1.5 |
| Average periodontal procedure fee | $280 |
| Hygienist hourly pay with benefits | $55.00 |
| Hours per day | 8 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Hygiene production per day | $1,995 |
| Production ÷ hygienist pay | 4.53x |
| Periodontal share of production | 21.1% |
| Production per hour | $249 |
| Annual hygiene production (220 days) | $438,900 |
How to read the result
Under-diagnosed periodontal disease is a common reason for low hygiene production; consistent periodontal charting and protocols address it.
Assisted hygiene schedules can raise production per hour where regulations allow.
