About this tool
What the Dollar-cost Averaging Calculator does
Dollar-cost averaging invests the same amount at regular intervals regardless of price. Because a fixed amount buys more shares when prices are low, the average cost per share ends up below the average price over the period. Enter the price at each purchase to see the result.
It also works as a DCA calculator.
Formula
- Shares bought each time = amount ÷ price
- Average cost = total invested ÷ total shares
- Value = total shares × current price
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Amount invested each time | $500 |
| Price at each purchase | 6 entries |
| Current price | $55.00 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Average cost per share | $45.68 |
| Gain | $612 |
| Average price over the period | $46.33 |
| Shares bought | 65.68 |
| Total invested | $3,000 |
| Value today | $3,612 |
| Return | 20.4% |
How to read the result
Average cost is always at or below the average price when you invest equal amounts, because you buy more shares at low prices.
Investing a lump sum immediately has historically beaten dollar-cost averaging more often than not in rising markets; DCA mainly reduces the regret of bad timing.
