About this tool
What the Options Profit and Loss Calculator does
An option’s value at expiry depends only on the stock price and the strike. A long call profits above strike plus premium; a long put profits below strike minus premium; sellers take the opposite side. This calculator shows the result at your chosen price and across a range of prices.
Formula
- Call value at expiry = max(0, price − strike); put = max(0, strike − price)
- Long P/L = (value − premium) × shares; short P/L is the opposite
- Break-even: call = strike + premium; put = strike − premium
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Option type | Call |
| Position | Long (bought) |
| Strike price | $100 |
| Premium per share | $3.50 |
| Contracts | 2 |
| Shares per contract | 100 |
| Stock price at expiry | $110 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Profit or loss at that price | $1,300 |
| Break-even stock price | $103.50 |
| Maximum gain | Unlimited |
| Maximum loss | $700 |
| Premium paid or received | $700 |
How to read the result
Selling calls without owning the shares has unlimited risk. Brokers require margin, and losses can exceed the premium many times over.
This shows the result at expiry only. Before expiry, option prices also reflect time value and volatility.
For education only, not investment advice. Past returns do not guarantee future results.
