About this tool
What the Window Replacement Cost Estimator does
Window replacement cost depends on the number of windows, the unit price for the type and glazing chosen, installation labour, removal of old frames, interior and exterior trim, and permits. If new windows reduce heating and cooling bills, those savings give a payback period.
Formula
- Cost per window = unit + installation + removal + trim
- Total = (cost per window × windows + permits) × (1 − discount)
- Payback = total ÷ annual energy saving
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Number of windows | 10 |
| Price per window unit | $650 |
| Installation per window | $250 |
| Removal and disposal per window | $40.00 |
| Trim and finishing per window | $75.00 |
| Permits | $200 |
| Discount or rebate | 0% |
| Annual energy saving (optional) | $300 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Total project cost | $10,350 |
| Cost per window installed | $1,035 |
| Energy payback period | 34.5 years |
How to read the result
Energy savings rarely pay back the whole cost quickly; comfort, noise reduction, security and maintenance are usually the stronger reasons to replace.
Full-frame replacement costs more than insert replacement but is needed when frames are rotten.
