About this tool

What the W-2 vs 1099 Calculator does

A contractor rate that looks higher than a salary may not be. Contractors pay the employer’s half of Social Security and Medicare, fund their own benefits and are not paid for holidays. This calculator converts both offers into comparable annual values and finds the hourly rate that matches the salary.

Formula

  • W-2 value = salary + benefits + retirement match + employer payroll tax (7.65%)
  • 1099 value = hourly rate × billable hours − business costs
  • Matching rate = (W-2 value + business costs) ÷ billable hours

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
W-2 salary $90,000
Employer health benefits per year $8,000
Retirement match 4%
Paid days off 20
1099 hourly rate $65.00
Billable hours per year (1099) 1,800
Contractor business costs per year $3,000
Result Value
1099 minus W-2 value $5,515
Hourly rate to match the W-2 job $61.94
W-2 total value $108,485
1099 value after costs $114,000
W-2 salary per hour worked $46.88

How to read the result

Billable hours are usually well below 2,080. Holidays, sickness, admin and finding work typically leave 1,400 to 1,800 billable hours a year.

Employer payroll tax is counted as part of the W-2 value because a contractor pays that half themselves through self-employment tax.

Often 25% to 50% more per hour than the equivalent employee's salary per hour, to cover self-employment tax, benefits and unpaid time.

7.65% of wages: 6.2% Social Security up to the wage base and 1.45% Medicare.

Contractors are paid only for billable time, so non-billable hours must be covered by the rate.
