About this tool
What the Unit Conversion Calculator does
Every unit in a category converts through a base unit: metres for length, kilograms for mass, litres for volume and so on, using exact defined factors such as 1 inch = 2.54 cm and 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg. Temperature is the exception, because its scales have different zero points.
It also works as a unit converter or a metric to imperial converter.
Formula
- Result = value × factor(from) ÷ factor(to)
- °F = °C × 9/5 + 32; K = °C + 273.15
- 1 in = 2.54 cm exactly; 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exactly
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Value | 10 |
| From | Length: mile (mi) |
| To | Length: kilometre (km) |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Result | 16.0934 |
| Conversion | 10 mi = 16.09344 km |
| Multiply by | 1.6093 |
How to read the result
US and imperial gallons, pints and fluid ounces differ; a UK pint is about 20% larger than a US pint.
Storage makers use decimal units (1 GB = 10⁹ bytes); operating systems often show binary units (GiB).
