About this tool
What the Retirement Calculator does
A retirement plan compares what your savings will grow to with what you need to fund your desired income for the length of retirement. This calculator grows today’s savings and contributions to retirement, works out the required nest egg from your target income after other income, and shows any gap.
Formula
- Projected savings = savings × (1 + r)^n + contribution × ((1 + r)^n − 1) ÷ r
- Income needed at retirement = (desired − other income) × (1 + inflation)^years to retirement
- Nest egg = present value of that inflation-rising income over retirement at the real return
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Current age | 35 |
| Retirement age | 65 |
| Plan to age | 95 |
| Current retirement savings | $50,000 |
| Monthly contribution | $800 |
| Return before retirement | 7% |
| Return during retirement | 5% |
| Inflation | 2.5% |
| Desired annual income (today’s money) | $60,000 |
| Other retirement income per year (today’s money) | $20,000 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Status | Short |
| Projected savings at retirement | $1,381,802 |
| Nest egg needed | $1,813,653 |
| Shortfall (negative = surplus) | $431,851 |
| Extra monthly saving to close the gap | $354 |
How to read the result
Small changes in the return assumption make big differences over decades. Test a cautious return as well as your expected one.
Retiring a few years later helps in three ways: more contributions, more growth and fewer years to fund.
