About this tool
What the Medical Practice A/R Days Calculator does
Days in A/R is total accounts receivable divided by average daily charges. It shows how long it takes, on average, to collect for services. Bringing it down to target releases cash that is currently tied up in unpaid claims and patient balances.
Formula
- Average daily charges = charges ÷ days in period
- Days in A/R = A/R ÷ average daily charges
- Reduction = (current days − target) × daily charges
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Total accounts receivable | $450,000 |
| Gross charges over the period | $1,350,000 |
| Days in the period | 90 |
| Target days in A/R | 35 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Days in A/R | 30.0 |
| Receivables reduced at target | $0.00 |
| Average daily charges | $15,000 |
How to read the result
Use the same basis (gross or net charges) consistently; net-based A/R days are more comparable across payer contracts.
Work claims by age and payer: a few large payers with slow processing often drive the average.
