About this tool
What the Fertilizer Application Rate Calculator does
Recommendations are given in pounds of nutrient per acre (N, P₂O₅ or K₂O), but fertiliser products contain only part of that nutrient. Dividing the nutrient needed, after any credits, by the product’s nutrient percentage gives the pounds of product to apply.
Formula
- Nutrient needed = recommendation − credits
- Product rate = nutrient needed ÷ nutrient %
- Tons = rate × acres ÷ 2,000
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Nutrient recommendation | 160 lb/acre |
| Credits (manure, previous legume) | 30 lb/acre |
| Product nutrient content | 46% |
| Acres | 120 |
| Product price per ton | $560 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Product rate | 282.6 |
| Total product needed (tons) | 16.96 |
| Nutrient to apply (lb/acre) | 130.0 |
| Cost per acre | $79.13 |
| Total cost | $9,496 |
| Cost per lb of nutrient | $0.61 |
How to read the result
Compare products on cost per pound of nutrient, not price per ton.
Split nitrogen applications can reduce losses on sandy or wet soils.
Estimates for planning. Use soil tests, local extension guidance and your agronomist’s recommendations for field decisions.
