About this tool
What the FERS Retirement Calculator does
The FERS basic annuity is 1% of high-3 average salary per year of service, or 1.1% if you retire at 62 or later with at least 20 years. Retiring at the minimum retirement age with 10 to 29 years under the MRA+10 rule reduces the annuity by 5% for each year under 62, and a survivor annuity election reduces it further.
Formula
- Annuity = high-3 × years × 1% (1.1% at 62+ with 20+ years)
- MRA+10 reduction = 5% per year under 62
- Survivor election reduces by 5% (partial) or 10% (full)
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| High-3 average salary | $95,000 |
| Years of creditable service | 25 |
| Age at retirement | 62 |
| Retiring under MRA+10 (10–29 years) | No |
| Survivor annuity election | None |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Annual basic annuity | $26,125 |
| Monthly annuity | $2,177 |
| Multiplier applied | 1.1 |
| MRA+10 age reduction | 0.0% |
| Share of high-3 replaced | 27.5% |
How to read the result
The FERS supplement may be paid before 62 in some immediate retirements, and the TSP and Social Security make up the rest of FERS retirement income.
Unused sick leave can add service credit for the annuity computation.
