About this tool
What the Dividend Yield Calculator does
Dividend yield is the annual dividend per share divided by the share price. It tells you the income a stock pays relative to what it costs today. Yield on cost compares the same dividend with the price you originally paid, which rises as dividends grow.
Formula
- Annual dividend = dividend per payment × payments per year
- Dividend yield = annual dividend ÷ share price
- Yield on cost = annual dividend ÷ your cost per share
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| Share price | $52.00 |
| Dividend per payment | $0.45 |
| Payments per year | Quarterly |
| Shares owned | 300 |
| Your cost per share (optional) | $40.00 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Dividend yield | 3.46% |
| Annual dividend income | $540 |
| Average monthly income | $45.00 |
| Annual dividend per share | $1.80 |
| Yield on cost | 4.50% |
How to read the result
An unusually high yield often reflects a falling share price and a dividend the market expects to be cut. Check the payout ratio and dividend history.
Dividends may be taxed differently from capital gains; compare investments on after-tax income.
