About this tool
What the Dental New Patient Value Calculator does
A new dental patient is worth far more than their first visit: they return for recall appointments, accept further treatment over the years and refer family and friends. Estimating lifetime value tells a practice how much it can afford to spend to attract each new patient.
Formula
- Lifetime production = first year + annual production × (years − 1)
- Including referrals = lifetime production × (1 + referrals per patient)
- Affordable acquisition cost = lifetime profit ÷ 3
Worked example
Using the starting values in the calculator above:
| Input | Value |
|---|---|
| First-year production per new patient | $1,200 |
| Average annual production after year one | $650 |
| Average years as a patient | 7 |
| Practice margin on production | 35% |
| Referrals per patient | 0.5 |
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Lifetime production including referrals | $7,650 |
| Lifetime profit | $2,678 |
| Lifetime production, patient only | $5,100 |
| Affordable cost per new patient (3:1) | $893 |
How to read the result
Retention is the biggest lever on patient value; reliable recall systems and follow-up add years to the average relationship.
Measure new patient value by marketing source; patients from referrals and search often stay longer than discount-driven patients.
