About this tool

What the Pay Gap Calculator does

An unadjusted pay gap compares the average or median pay of one group with a reference group across the organisation, regardless of role. Median gaps are less affected by a few very high earners. These figures show representation and progression patterns; a separate adjusted analysis is needed to test equal pay for equal work.

It also works as a DEI pay equity analyzer or a gender pay gap calculator.

Formula

  • Mean gap = (reference mean − group mean) ÷ reference mean
  • Median gap = (reference median − group median) ÷ reference median
  • A positive gap means the group is paid less on average

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Groups 3 entries
Result Value
Median pay gap (second row vs reference) 10.5%
Mean pay gap (second row vs reference) 13.4%
Employees covered 126

How to read the result

Very small groups produce unstable figures and can identify individuals; many reporting rules set minimum group sizes.

Investigate the drivers: gaps usually reflect who holds senior or higher-paid roles, as well as any unequal pay for the same work.

Questions

Questions about this tool

The things clients actually want to know — costs, timelines, ownership and what happens after launch.

The difference in average or median pay between groups across the whole organisation, not controlling for role.

No. Unequal pay means paying differently for the same or equivalent work; a gap can also come from role distribution.

It is less distorted by a small number of very high or low earners.
