About this tool

What the Cattle Weight Gain Calculator does

Average daily gain (ADG) is weight gained divided by days. Projecting forward at that rate gives the days to reach a target weight, and dividing feed and other costs by pounds gained gives the cost of gain, a key profit driver for stocker and feedlot cattle.

Formula

  • ADG = (current − starting weight) ÷ days
  • Days to target = (target − current) ÷ ADG
  • Cost of gain = (feed cost + other costs) ÷ lb gained

Worked example

Using the starting values in the calculator above:

Input Value
Starting weight 650 lb
Current weight 840 lb
Days on feed so far 70
Target weight 1,350 lb
Feed fed per head so far (as fed) 1,700 lb
Feed cost per ton $210
Other costs per head so far (yardage, vet) $45.00
Result Value
Average daily gain (lb/day) 2.71
Cost of gain (per lb) $1.18
Days to target weight 187.9 days
Weight gained (lb) 190.0
Feed to gain ratio 8.95
Cost per head so far $223.50

How to read the result

Compare cost of gain with the value of gain (price spread between weights) to judge whether to keep feeding.

Use shrunk weights consistently; gut fill can distort short-term ADG.

Estimates for planning. Use soil tests, local extension guidance and your agronomist’s recommendations for field decisions.
